The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) held a high-level meeting with prominent Israeli members of parliament in Jerusalem, calling the meeting a historic milestone in its global diplomatic campaign. The group considers the meeting an important step forward in its advocacy for self-determination and the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
A delegation led by Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ, head of the Fourth State Directorate of the IPOB Administration, held talks with Knesset Vice Chairman Nissim Vaturi and Limor Son Har-Melech, vice chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee. The IPOB described the reception as warm and very productive, and expressed its gratitude for the solidarity shown by the Israeli members of parliament during the talks.
The group highlighted the historical similarities between the experiences of the Jewish and Biafran peoples, including past persecution and forced displacement. IPOB sees the rebirth of Israel as a source of inspiration and believes that an independent Biafra would provide a safe haven for persecuted minorities, particularly the Jewish Christian communities of Nigeria. The organization maintains that sovereignty remains the most effective path to lasting peace and security in the Southeast Asian region.
This latest meeting is part of IPOB’s ongoing international work, which includes initiatives in the United States and other countries. It reflects the movement’s commitment to advancing its goals through legal diplomacy and strategic partnerships based on the shared principles of justice and human dignity. Nnamdi Kanu has been detained since 2021, and his trial is still ongoing.
This event follows previous debates on the Biafran question in the Knesset this year. While the meeting demonstrates the growing international attention to the IPOB's position, it was held with legislators in their individual capacities and does not represent an official change in Israeli government policy.
