Floods Disrupts TCN Substations in Lagos, Causing Widespread Blackouts

– LAGOS, Nigeria

Ongoing torrential rains have caused severe flooding in Lagos, prompting the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to declare force majeure at two key transmission substations. The company made this announcement on July 1, 2026, through its General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah. This situation has resulted in power outages for customers of the Electric Distribution Company Eko.

The 132/33 kV Oworonshoki transmission substation is completely out of service. The floods submerged two power transformers, the 60 MVA TR1 and the 30 MVA TR3. These transformers were disconnected under no-load conditions despite restoration efforts, and all their protection and control cables remain underwater. The continued rainfall has hampered pumping operations.

The 330/132 kV Lekki transmission substation is still partially operational. Engineering teams are continuously pumping water from the facility to prevent further damage. TCN has deployed engineers to both sites to drain the floodwater and conduct necessary integrity tests on the affected equipment.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of critical electrical infrastructure to seasonal flooding in Lagos. TCN engineers are working tirelessly to fully restore service as soon as water levels recede and it is safe to do so. The company has apologized for any inconvenience caused to affected electricity customers.
