Five Kenyan security officers were killed on Tuesday in a suspected Al-Shabaab ambush in Mandera County, near the Somali border. The attack occurred around midday in the Wantey Dam area of Lafey Sub-County, where a Special Operations Group patrol encountered militants. Initial reports indicate that the officers' vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED), after which the gunmen opened fire on the patrol.
Among the dead were four members of the Special Operations Group and a National Police reservist. A rescue team responding to the scene found a second IED during the operation but escaped without further casualties. Kenyan police have reinforced security measures in the affected region and launched an intensive search for the attackers.
