Anambra Police Thwart Kidnap Attempt, Arrest 66-Year-Old Fraud Syndicate Member

– AWKA, Anambra State

The Anambra State Police Command thwarted an alleged kidnapping attempt, rescued a victim, and arrested a 66-year-old man, identified as Kenneth Nnaji, for his alleged involvement in a criminal gang. Officers from the Awkuzu Rapid Response Squad (RRS) conducted the operation on the evening of Friday, July 11, 2026, in Awka. The command described the arrest as an important step in dismantling a network specializing in fraud and related criminal activities throughout the region.

According to a statement issued by Police Command spokesperson Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was linked to a gang accused of extorting money from unsuspecting people in and around Awka. During the operation, officers not only thwarted the apparent kidnapping plot but also rescued the victim, preventing further harm. Authorities are investigating the full extent of the gang's operations, which reportedly extended into neighboring states.

Nnaji's arrest underscores the ongoing efforts of the Anambra Police to combat the twin threats of violent crime and sophisticated fraud schemes that exploit residents. Preliminary investigations suggest the group employed deceptive tactics to lure victims before escalating threats or attempting kidnapping. Police have assured the public of their commitment to thorough investigations and the prosecution of all those involved.

Residents have welcomed the swift police intervention, which demonstrates a greater responsiveness to security issues in the state capital. Security analysts note that such operations help build public trust and deter criminals who operate under the guise of legitimate businesses. Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity.

The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public order and assured residents that it will continue to implement proactive measures against kidnapping, fraud, and other violent crimes. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide further information as new details emerge.
