JOHANNESBURG – Irish authorities have deported 42 South African citizens, including 18 women and 15 children, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan announced.
The group arrived in Johannesburg on Friday after being expelled from Ireland on Thursday.
The deportations are believed to be due to immigration violations, although Ireland has recently stepped up the expulsion of people involved in criminal activity.
These deportations coincide with rising xenophobic tensions in South Africa, where the local population accuses foreigners of taking jobs, prompting several African countries to repatriate their citizens.
