WASHINGTON, DC
President Donald J. Trump departed today for a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, scheduled for May 14-15, 2026.
This is his first visit to China in nearly nine years and their first in-person meeting since October 2025. The summit was postponed due to the situation in the Middle East.
The talks will focus on trade and economic cooperation (including extending the 2025 trade agreement, agriculture, civil aviation, and critical minerals), technology and artificial intelligence policy, the Iran crisis and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as Indo-Pacific security and cross-strait relations.
Trump is accompanied by senior officials and prominent U.S. business leaders, including Elon Musk and Tim Cook. Formal meetings and a state banquet are scheduled.
