A military court on Thursday ordered that opposition leader Domingos Simões Pereira remain under house arrest after questioning him again about allegations that he conspired to stage a coup against the ruling military junta, his lawyer said.
Pereira, secretary-general of the PAIGC party and a former prime minister, has been under house arrest since late January 2026. He was initially detained following the November 2025 military coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
The court is investigating his alleged involvement in coup attempts in late 2023 and October 2025. Pereira denies the charges, which his supporters consider politically motivated.
The transitional military authorities have called for new elections in December 2026.
