UN Allocates $60 Million to Combat Ebola Outbreak in Eastern DRC

The United Nations has released $60 million from its emergency funds to support the response to a fast-spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The funding will help deploy additional staff and strengthen containment efforts in a region facing ongoing conflict and population displacement.

This outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, unlike the more common Zaire strain. It has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization.

The virus has primarily affected Ituri Province and spread to parts of North Kivu, with hundreds of suspected cases and over 100 associated deaths reported so far. Imported cases have also been confirmed in neighboring Uganda. Response teams are focusing on surveillance, contact tracing, infection prevention, safe burials, and community engagement.

The situation remains active, with efforts continuing to limit further spread in this complex humanitarian environment.
