Nigerian Officials Indicted in Christian Killings
US Senator Ted Cruz has denounced the complicity of some Nigerian government officials in facilitating atrocities against Christians in the country.
On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, during a hearing of the US Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on US counterterrorism strategy in Africa, he declared that Nigeria is the most dangerous place in the world for Christians.
He stated that more Christians are killed for their faith in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world, noting that Islamic jihadists have murdered more than 50,000 Christians since 2009, in addition to destroying more than 20,000 churches, schools, and other religious buildings.
Cruz further accused Nigerian officials of enabling the violence, linking it in part to the imposition of Islamic law (Sharia) in several northern states. He criticized the government's response as slow and ineffective, noting that previous promises from defense and security officials to address the crisis had not been fulfilled. "Nigerian officials have, sadly, been complicit in facilitating these atrocities," Cruz stated during the hearing.
These remarks have sparked controversy in Nigeria, with mixed reactions ranging from support for international scrutiny of religious violence to criticism that the claims oversimplify complex security issues, including insurgency, banditry, and land-grabbing by herders.
