| Zambia's ruling party and supporters hail the changes as a major step toward a more representative democracy. |
Zambia's parliament has approved a landmark constitutional amendment to overhaul its electoral system ahead of the 2026 general elections. The bill passed with a large majority on December 15, 2025.
The reforms significantly expand parliament, adding 55 new constituency seats for a total of 211. Crucially, they introduce a new proportional representation system, creating 35 reserved seats specifically for women, youth, and persons with disabilities to boost inclusivity.
The ruling party and supporters hail the changes as a major step toward a more representative democracy. However, opposition groups and critics warn the changes could strain public finances, reduce accountability, and increase executive power.
The bill now awaits President Hakainde Hichilema's signature to become law.
