— The Hague
Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court have asked for a life sentence for Ali Kushayb (Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman), 76, after he was convicted in July on 27 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, and persecution committed in Darfur in 2003–2004.
Kushayb, a former Janjaweed militia commander, denies he is the wanted man. Judges rejected the claim. His defense is requesting a seven-year term, which with time served could see him freed in about 18 months.
The sentencing comes as Sudan’s current war between the army and the RSF (successor to the Janjaweed) has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, echoing the same patterns of violence for which Kushayb was convicted.
Final sentencing is expected soon.
