Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of pro-Biafra independence group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has lodged a formal request with Nigeria's Supreme Court to terminate his terrorism trial.
In a dramatic personal appearance at the court, Kanu argued that the 15-count charge against him is legally invalid, as it relies on a repealed 2011 terrorism law. His submission also challenges the Supreme Court's own December 2023 retrial ruling, claiming it was made without jurisdiction.
The move comes just six days before a scheduled High Court ruling on a similar motion to dismiss the case. Kanu maintains that continuing the prosecution violates constitutional provisions against trying individuals under non-existent laws.
The case continues to draw international attention, with IPOB describing the Supreme Court submission as a “final judicial lifeline.”
