At least six nuns from Sisters of Sainte-Anne Congregation have been kidnapped as well as the other occupants including the driver of the vehicle in which they were traveling.

The kidnapping took place on January 19, 2024 in broad daylight in the center of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.

According to local sources, the unidentified gunmen stopped and boarded the minibus as it was heading to the university, taking all passengers hostage.

In a press release, the Haitian Conference of Religious confirmed reports of the incident, calling it a “barbaric act.”  Bishop Pierre-André Dumas called for the release of the hostages, declaring himself ready to take their place.

Unrest has worsened in Haiti as armed gangs exchange fire and intensify their criminal and deadly activities, which left at least twenty (20) people killed on Thursday.

Anti-government protesters are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who have been in power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, criticized for not doing enough to deal with insecurity and the country's struggling economy.
