A Catholic priest, Reverend Father Kelvin Ugwu has called for the establishment of more industries in Africa, saying the continent needs more industries than centers of worship.
The priest revealed his mind in a post on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
He said there should be competition in creating jobs rather than building houses of worship in a continent where unemployment and poverty have increased.
“Imagine if the competition in Africa is about who is building the next big industry or school and not who is building the next big mosque or church or adoration ground,” he wrote.
He stated that "In Gambia, every space you see, a mosque is built. In Southern Nigeria, every space you see, a church is built.
“And when we gather, what are we praying for?
“To have money to buy Dangote spaghetti, Dangote rice, Dangote fertilizer, Dangote cement, and Dangote petro and gas. We even pray to get employed by Dangote.”
Father Ugwu noted that he is not asking that churches and mosques not be built at all, but stated that Africa need more industries to create jobs and boost its economy.
