– Nairobi, Kenya
The Kenyan Director of Public Prosecutions has approved 16 murder charges against nine students in connection with the deadly fire at a dormitory at Utumishi Girls' Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County. The incident occurred on the night of May 28, 2016, claiming the lives of 16 girls and injuring 79 others. The suspects, all minors between the ages of 15 and 16, were linked to the fire through security camera footage and forensic investigations.
The fire originated in a dormitory with a capacity of 220 students and equipped with 135 bunk beds. Authorities determined that the students deliberately started the fire using paraffin and matches. Extreme overcrowding and the lack of an emergency exit forced students to escape through a single door, significantly contributing to the high death toll. The school's headmistress has been suspended for safety violations.
The nine suspects were arrested days after the tragedy and held for 21 days to allow for the completion of the investigation. Following a thorough review of the evidence by homicide detectives, the Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the charges and expressed its condolences to the affected families. The students are expected to appear in court soon to answer the formal charges.
This case highlights persistent safety issues in Kenyan boarding schools, including inadequate fire safety measures and overcrowding. Similar incidents in the past have repeatedly exposed systemic deficiencies in school infrastructure and emergency preparedness across the country.
As the proceedings continue, authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring full accountability and have called for urgent reforms to safeguard students in educational institutions nationwide.
