Lagos State, Nigeria.
The National Drug Control Agency (NDLEA) intercepted a 40-foot container with 4,959 kilograms of Canadian Loud, a potent cannabis strain, at the port of Apapa, Lagos. The shipment, packaged in 195 large sacks and valued at approximately 12.4 billion naira, was discovered hidden next to a Ford and a Nissan. This is one of the largest cannabis seizures made by the agency this year.
The container departed Toronto, Canada, on April 25, 2026. It traveled by rail to Montreal, then to Tangier Med in Morocco, before arriving at the port of Tin Can, Lagos, on June 4. After being unloaded, the shipment was transported to the port of Apapa, where NDLEA agents, in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service and other agencies, seized it during a joint inspection.
NDLEA Special Operations Units closely monitored the shipment for more than four weeks throughout its journey. Femi Babafemi, the agency's Director of Media and Promotion, confirmed the details in an official statement. President Mohamed Buba Marwa has maintained a firm stance against large-scale drug imports.
This operation is part of the NDLEA's intensified efforts to disrupt major drug trafficking networks operating through Nigerian seaports. In related actions, the agency recently arrested a businesswoman attempting to smuggle 7.5 kilograms of cocaine to China at Lagos Airport.
Investigations into the owners of the shipment are ongoing. The NDLEA says it will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, thus reinforcing its commitment to dismantling major drug supply chains in Nigeria.
