13 Killed in Accra Flooding as New Storm Approaches

– Accra, Ghana

At least thirteen people lost their lives after torrential rains caused severe flooding in Ghana's capital on June 29, 2026. The Ghana National Fire Service, which is in charge of rescue operations, confirmed the death toll, which could rise as teams continue searching the affected areas. So far, more than 470 people have been rescued from the floods.

Around 140 millimeters of rain fell in a single night, almost triple the maximum recorded in a single day last year. The deluge submerged homes, vehicles, and streets in low-lying neighborhoods, overwhelmed the city's drainage systems, and caused widespread destruction. A large fire also broke out at a rubber factory, complicating emergency efforts. Power was temporarily cut in several areas to prevent the risk of electrocution.

President John Dramani Mahama conducted an aerial survey to assess the damage and pointed to climate change and human activities, such as illegal construction in waterways and clogged drains, as key contributing factors. He has ordered the demolition of these illegal structures and released emergency funds for humanitarian aid. Authorities have urged residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and to move to higher ground if necessary.

As the waters begin to recede, recovery operations are underway. However, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned of another severe storm approaching from the east, expected to bring more torrential rain to southern Ghana, including Accra, on Tuesday. This disaster highlights Accra’s recurring vulnerability to flooding, fueled by rapid urbanization, poor urban planning, and inadequate drainage infrastructure in a city of more than four million people.

Experts stress the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building codes and improved flood management systems to protect communities from increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
