KAMPALA, Uganda

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a global health emergency due to the increase in cross-border transmission.

The outbreak, linked to the Bundibugyo strain, has seen more than 240 suspected cases and around 80 deaths, and health authorities warn of further regional spread.

Cases have already been detected in some areas of Uganda, including Kampala.

Health officials say there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this strain, raising concerns as the WHO and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) intensify surveillance, contact tracing, and emergency response measures.
