President William Ruto has ordered a reduction of 10 Kenyan shillings per liter in the price of diesel for the June-July 2026 price cycle. The announcement was made today, May 22, 2026, at Government House in Mombasa, following consultations with leaders in the transport sector.
In his address, President Ruto stated, ‘After consulting with leaders in the transport sector, I have ordered that, in the price cycle, we will further reduce the price of diesel by 10 Kenyan shillings for the June-July period.’Currently, diesel sells for 232.86 Kenyan shillings per liter in Nairobi.
The new reduction will lower the price to approximately 222.86 Kenyan shillings per liter starting June 14. This comes after a sharp increase earlier this month that raised the price of diesel to 242.92 Kenyan shillings per liter, sparking public protests and a transport strike due to concerns about the rising cost of living. The government has already invested billions in fuel subsidies and tax breaks to protect consumers from global oil price fluctuations caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
While the reduction offers some relief, transport operators continue to press for more substantial measures to alleviate the economic pressure on Kenyans. President Ruto also called for calm and unity, urging citizens to reject violence when expressing their grievances.
