Ghanaians Repatriated from South Africa Amid Anti-Immigrant Protests

– Johannesburg, South Africa

Ghana has begun repatriating its citizens from South Africa following weeks of intense anti-immigrant protests that have created insecurity among many foreigners. Early Wednesday morning May 27, 2026, the first group of approximately 300 Ghanaians, including women and children, departed from Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport on a charter flight. Buses chartered by the embassy transported the passengers to the airport around 3:00 a.m. local time, marking the start of a larger operation.

Around 800 Ghanaians have signed up to return voluntarily, and additional flights are scheduled for the coming days. Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, explained that the government acted after citizens expressed deep concern for their safety and livelihoods. Many reported that their businesses had ground to a halt and that they no longer felt welcome in the country.

The repatriation comes amid growing protests led by the March and March group, which accuses undocumented immigrants of stealing jobs, overburdening public services, and contributing to crime. South African authorities have confirmed that of the first 300 repatriated individuals, only about 10 had valid legal status in the country.

Ghana is providing reintegration support for those returning home, including assistance in restarting businesses and counseling services. An estimated 25,000 Ghanaians currently reside in South Africa. The group has set June 30 as the deadline for undocumented migrants to leave the country, increasing the sense of urgency felt by many.

The repatriated individuals expressed their relief at returning home. One person who had lived in South Africa for ten years said they were leaving in search of peace, citing fears that rising tensions could lead to further unrest. Other groups of registered Ghanaians are expected to arrive in the country as checks and preparations continue.
