The deputy governors of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, and Akwa Ibom State, Etim Eyakenyi, held a joint peace meeting in Akirika Obu to ease tensions between the Akirika Obu community in Ukwa-East Local Government Area of Abia State and the Ikot Udo community in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
This intervention aims to prevent any disruption to the construction of the Abia-Akwa Ibom road. The two officials emphasized that the meeting was not intended to resolve border or land disputes, which fall under the jurisdiction of the National Border Commission, but rather to ensure the smooth progress of the road project for the benefit of both states.
Mr. Emetu insisted: “We are not here to claim borders… Once the road is tarred, development and prosperity will follow.”
The two states resolved to build the road from their respective borders, with the sections to be connected in the disputed area awaiting official demarcation.
They advocated for peaceful coexistence among both communities, commended security agencies for maintaining order and warned against any sabotage.
