Sokoto State Police have identified an emerging group known as “Sai Malam” as a terrorist sect that poses a significant threat in northwestern Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto.

Police arrested the group's alleged leader and self-proclaimed chief priest, Mohammed Mukhtar, on Friday.

A search of his residence, which was used as a shrine, yielded a live python, banners bearing the inscription "Sai Malam," and various fetish items.

Police Commissioner Ahmed Musa described the group as promoting witchcraft, ritual practices, demonic activities, homosexuality, vandalism, and violence.

It recruits young people through a private WhatsApp group called “Red Chamber.” Authorities are warning parents to monitor their children's online activities, and operations are underway to apprehend the remaining members.

There are no confirmed links to established jihadist organizations like Boko Haram, but the group is considered a serious security risk amid regional challenges.
