Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on December 15, 2023, held a protest in the United Kingdom.
The protesters marched from Downing Street to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, where they called on British authorities to compel the Nigerian government to release the self-determination group's detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
At the Nigerian High Commissioner's office in the United Kingdom, IPOB members also staged a protest condemning the continued imprisonment of Mr. Kanu, whom a Nigerian Court of Appeal had acquitted and ordered his release.
Kanu, who faces criminal charges including treason in Nigeria for calling a referendum on Biafra, has been detained since 2021 after being seized in Kenya and handed over to Nigeria in a manner described by lawyers and court as “kidnap and against international laws”.
His family and some Igbo leaders continue to demand his release, saying he will restore normalcy to the Biafra region, where locals advocate for a separate state known as Biafra.
