A passenger bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweiba coastal road in South Sinai early Wednesday morning, killing at least 22 people and injuring 28 others. The crash occurred near the Al-Saada area as the vehicle was heading toward the Red Sea town of Nuweiba. Egyptian health authorities confirmed the casualty figures after dispatching 20 ambulances to the scene and transporting the injured to hospitals in Sharm El-Sheikh, Saint Catherine, and other nearby facilities.
The bus was carrying approximately 43 passengers, many of whom were Jordanian travelers. About 10 of the deceased were Jordanian citizens, and several others of the same nationality were among the injured. The exact cause remains under investigation, though early local reports pointed to a possible tire failure or the driver losing control due to speed on this popular tourist route.
Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered medical teams to heighten their state of readiness and provide comprehensive care, medication, and equipment to the injured. Staff continue to closely monitor the patients while official procedures regarding the victims are completed. The ministry activated its central operations center as soon as news of the accident was received.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly ordered the formation of a technical committee to investigate the accident. The group includes officials from the Ministries of Transport and the Interior, the South Sinai Governorate, and the Administrative Control Authority. They will analyze the condition of the bus, the status of the driver, and factors related to the road itself. The Jordanian Embassy in Cairo is working with Egyptian counterparts to support its citizens and arrange for the repatriation of the deceased.
The Dahab-Nuweiba road connects popular tourist towns renowned for their beaches and diving activities, and has undergone safety improvements in recent years.
