— LONDON, United Kingdom
Uchechi Okwu Kanu, the wife of detained Nigerian separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed social media claims that she filed for divorce.
The rumors emerged amid a leadership crisis within the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the group her husband leads. Mrs. Kanu, who has also been accused of supporting members of a faction reportedly suspended by her husband, called the “divorce“ reports false.
“I have just learned that I filed for Divorce while my husband is in prison,” she wrote on Facebook, adding a laughing emoji.
Nnamdi Kanu has been held since June 2021, after being forcibly returned to Nigeria from Kenya, a move widely condemned as an illegal rendition. His lawyers are appealing his life sentence, while Nigerian authorities are seeking the death penalty.
