– LAGOS, Nigeria
The final Nigerian government-sponsored evacuation flight from South Africa landed safely at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, successfully concluding a multi-flight humanitarian operation.
The Air Peace plane carried 308 Nigerian citizens, bringing the total number of citizens repatriated through this government initiative to over 1,500. The flight also brought back three Nigerian officials who had coordinated logistics and support efforts in South Africa. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu announced the completion of the operation, noting that President Bola Tinubu personally approved the emergency flights to protect citizens amid escalating tensions.
The repatriations came in the wake of alleged xenophobic attacks and security concerns in parts of South Africa, coupled with a nationwide crackdown on undocumented immigrants that has resulted in tens of thousands of deportations since early June. Many of the affected Nigerians, including families, sought refuge and assistance at the Nigerian Embassy in Pretoria, facing threats and operational difficulties. Previous flights repatriated hundreds of people in stages, with delays stemming from document verification and other necessary procedures.
Upon arrival in Lagos, the repatriates received the necessary immigration services and support before proceeding to their final destinations. This operation reflects the Nigerian government's commitment to protecting its citizens abroad during periods of high risk. It also underscores the recurring challenges faced by migrant communities in South Africa, where economic hardship and local frustration have historically contributed to xenophobic sentiment and sporadic violence.
Once the official evacuation was completed, authorities indicated that consular support remains available for any Nigerian still needing assistance in South Africa. These events underscore broader continental issues related to migration, integration, and bilateral cooperation to address the root causes of these tensions.
