Three Cameroonian soldiers were killed by gunfire in a surprise ambush at the Bafusco Air military post in Bafut, in the Northwest region, on Sunday around 10 p.m. The attack triggered a fierce exchange of fire that lasted several minutes, sowing panic among residents who fled for safety.
The victims were a corporal and two privates from the 2024 graduating class. According to witnesses, the attack was well-coordinated and took the post by surprise.
A separatist commander known as “General Terminator” claimed responsibility for the attack. He operates within the Ambazonian armed groups, which are fighting for the independence of the self-proclaimed Federal Republic of Ambazonia in the English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon.
The Ambazonian separatist movement emerged in 2017 following protests against the marginalization of the Anglophone linguistic, educational, and legal systems. The separatists proclaimed their independence, triggering an ongoing armed conflict with government forces. This conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and resulted in numerous casualties on both sides.
No official statement has been issued by the government or military authorities regarding the incident or the human losses. The situation in Bafut remains tense, with ongoing clashes between armed separatist factions and security forces in the Northwest region.
