– Gilgil, Kenya
A devastating fire swept through a dormitory at Utumishi Girls' Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, early Thursday morning, claiming the lives of 16 students. The fire broke out around 1:00 a.m. and was reported at approximately 3:30 a.m., according to the Kenya Red Cross. Education Minister Julius Ogamba confirmed the death toll, though the identification of the victims is still ongoing.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene. More than 70 students were hospitalized, most with minor injuries, shock, and trauma sustained while escaping; some reportedly jumped from balconies after locking a door. Most have been discharged, while some remain under observation.
Senior government officials, including Home Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, visited the school as forensic teams and investigators from the DCI (Department of Criminal Investigation) began investigating the cause, which remains unknown. Parents gathered amid heartbreaking scenes, and teachers took attendance to ensure all students were present.
President William Ruto expressed his condolences, calling the incident a painful national tragedy. He ordered that rescue operations, care for the injured, and support for affected families be prioritized immediately while a thorough investigation is conducted.
The tragedy has reignited concerns about safety standards in Kenyan boarding schools, which have experienced similar dormitory fires in the past. The school has been temporarily closed to facilitate the investigation, and psychosocial support has been provided to survivors and their families.
