Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82 in a London hospital, his aide Garba Shehu confirmed on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Buhari’s death announcement comes years after controversial claims by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who repeatedly alleged between 2017 and 2018 that the former president had died and been replaced by an impostor named “Jubril from Sudan.”
Kanu, a detained Biafran separatist activist, propagated these claims on Radio Biafra and social media until his arrest in 2021.
Buhari served two terms in office, completing his presidency in 2023. Before his democratic tenure, he had ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 following a coup.
