A Family Court sitting at the Aba Magistrate Court Abia State has convicted Chidiebere Kalu, a 30-year-old school security guard, for sexually abusing a 10-year-old student from Radiant Glory Academy in Umuichichi. The ruling, handed down on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, found Kalu guilty on two counts indecent assault and intimidation of a minor following incidents reported by the girl's family that allegedly took place on school premises.
The court sentenced the defendant to one year in prison without the option of a fine for the first count, and one year in prison with the option of a ₦200,000 fine for the second count. It was ordered that both sentences be served concurrently. The case proceeded after the victim's family reported the matter to the relevant authorities, leading to a thorough investigation and the subsequent trial.
Following the verdict, the Vivacious Development Initiative (VIDI), in collaboration with the Child Protection Network (CPN) Abia State chapter hailed the conviction as a major victory for child protection and justice. In a statement issued on Thursday, the organizations affirmed that the ruling reaffirmed every child's right to protection, justice, and dignity.
Ambassador Onyinyechi Joy Nwosu, Executive Director of VIDI and coordinator of the Child Protection Network in Abia State, stated that the groups provided protective support to the affected minor, monitored the police investigation, and tracked the case throughout the judicial process up to the sentencing. She emphasized that the outcome sends a clear message: child abuse has no place in schools or communities, and perpetrators can be held accountable through the justice system.
Nwosu further emphasized the need to strengthen child protection laws, law enforcement mechanisms, and sentencing frameworks to ensure an effective deterrent effect. He commended the Nigeria Police Force, the prosecution team, the judiciary, and other stakeholders, while acknowledging the courage of the child victim and her parents. VIDI reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with government institutions, schools, communities, and partners to prevent violence against children and promote safe learning environments.
