– Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State
Residents of Birnin Gwari took to the streets on Friday to protest a deadly attack by repentant bandits. The incident claimed the life of Mallam Ibrahim Adamu, the grandson of a district chief, who was shot dead in Kwanan Giginya, on the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road. Five passengers in his vehicle were also kidnapped.
In a separate attack on the same day, four farmers were abducted while working in the Kurgi area of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area. This brings the total number of abductees to nine.
The protests led to young people expelling some Fulani herders and residents from the town. Security forces and traditional leaders quickly intervened to restore calm and prevent the situation from escalating.
These incidents have raised concerns about the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs for bandits, as attacks continue in the area. Armed groups have reportedly seized valuables, disrupting economic activity in the region.
Local leaders have requested increased security patrols along the highway and greater protection for farming communities, while families await the release of their kidnapped loved ones.
