Hundreds of residents marched toward City Hall to oppose what they considered an illegal challenge to South African sovereignty. The peaceful protest descended into chaos after reports of a stabbing, leading to between 10 and 13 vehicles being set ablaze and attacks on foreigners' properties.
Police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Several injuries were reported.
The Nigerian High Commission clarified that the event was a cultural celebration, not an official coronation, and expressed regret over the unrest.
According to police, calm is gradually returning to the city as investigations continue.
