During today’s National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health, Enugu monarch HRH Dr. Lawrence Agubuzu (Eze Ogbunechendo of Ezema Olo Kingdom) directly told Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu to free the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu, a British-Nigerian activist who advocates for an independent Biafran state in southeastern Nigeria, was controversially rearrested in Kenya in 2021 and extradited to Nigeria amid accusations of illegal rendition.

The separatist leader was handed life was handed life sentence on November 20, 2025. The verdict has been widely criticized by international observers and others as a miscarriage of justice.

“The ball is in your court. Bring this man out,” said Dr Agubuzu. “If Nigeria doesn’t want him, send him back to Kenya or London so we can move forward.”

Agubuzu warned that Kanu’s continued detention is increasing youth unrest in the South-East and eroding traditional leaders’ influence.
