President Samia Suluhu Hassan announced an independent commission to investigate violence during last month’s general elections, in which dozens were killed amid opposition protests.

Speaking at parliament’s opening, she said she was “deeply saddened” and offered condolences to victims’ families.

The move follows widespread allegations of state repression, arbitrary arrests, and extrajudicial killings during the polls, which Hassan won with nearly 98% of the vote.

Opposition party Chadema boycotted the election and rejected the results. International observers and the UN have called for accountability. Hassan also urged leniency for some detained protesters.
