In a controversial ruling, a Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment. The sentence was delivered in absentia, as Kanu was not present in the courtroom.
The presiding judge, James Kolawole Omotosho, outlined the charges for which Mr. Kanu was convicted, which included alleged terrorism and treasonable felony for advocating for an independent state known as Biafra. The court found him guilty based on the unsubstantiated evidence presented by the Federal Government's prosecution team.
In addition to the life sentence, the court imposed severe restrictive measures. Mr Nnamdi Kanu is barred from using any gadgets or electronic devices for the rest of his life. This extraordinary condition is believed to be an attempt to prevent him from further communicating with his followers and influencing the activities of the IPOB movement.
Many people including international observers has already condemned the ruling, calling it “a grave miscarriage of justice.” The verdict will be appealed, said Mr. Kanu's legal team.
A security expert, Humphrey Uche, warned that the sentencing will escalate tensions in Nigeria's Southeast region, where Mr. Kanu and IPOB enjoy significant support for their campaign for a separate Biafran state.
