Separatist fighters in the restive English-speaking region of Cameroon have claimed responsibility for kidnapping some high-profile civilians in the restive part of the country.
The victims were abducted on May 22, 2023 at Ngie in Momo Division, North West Region.
Among the kidnapped persons is Stephen Ujambeng Ando, a member of the North West Regional Assembly.
Copa Daniel, a spokesman for the separatist fighters, said the Ambazonia Defense Forces (ADF) carried out the abduction, which he described as an "arrest".
According to him, the 'unelected' member of parliament who was wanted by a separatist fighter, misrepresented the masses in parliament, an act he said is a crime.
In a statement on Facebook, the spokesman for the Amba fighters praised the ADF forces, saying the punishment for the MP and other victims would be heavy because they had committed "treason".
Violence and fighting between government forces and armed civilians has continued for nearly eight years in the English-speaking region where separatists are demanding an independent state known as Ambazonia.
Both government forces and separatist fighters have been accused of crimes and extrajudicial killings.
