Kenyan aviation workers have called off a two-day strike that caused significant disruptions, following the signing of an agreement on Tuesday to return to work. The Kenya Aviation Workers Union reached the deal with the Ministry of Transport, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, the Kenya Airports Authority, and the airline Jambojet, following overnight negotiations led by Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir.
The industrial action, which began on August 30 and primarily involved air traffic controllers, led to flight delays and cancellations, leaving passengers stranded at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other terminals across the country. Regional routes within East Africa were also affected.
Union leader Moss Ndiema instructed members to resume their duties immediately and begin managing air traffic. The agreement includes a commitment to settle outstanding union dues and to resume negotiations on long-standing collective bargaining issues.
Airport operations are expected to return to normal, although airlines may require additional time to manage the backlog of delays and restore their full flight schedules.
