Trump Administration to Closely Monitor Nigeria’s 2027 Elections, Says US Congressman

– Washington, D.C.

US Congressman Riley Moore stated that the Trump administration will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, paying particular attention to the outcome and the electoral process.

In a recent interview with Noire TV, the Republican lawmaker from West Virginia said, ‘We will be watching the 2027 Nigerian elections very closely. We will certainly be watching the results, the election process, and its implementation, and both I and the administration will be paying very close attention to this aspect.’

Moore’s remarks come as he continues to press for the United States to take stronger action regarding religious freedom and security in Nigeria. He is a co-sponsor of the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 and has supported provisions in budget appropriations bills that link U.S. security assistance to enhanced protections for vulnerable communities, particularly Christians who suffer violence.

Nigeria’s next general elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, for the presidency and the National Assembly, followed by gubernatorial and state assembly elections on February 6, 2027.

The legislator has previously visited Nigeria and engaged directly with the Trump administration on these matters, reflecting the U.S. Congress’s ongoing interest in the country’s democratic process and human rights situation.
