KATSINA, Nigeria — Retired Nigerian Major General Rabe Abubakar died at the hands of armed bandits in Katsina State, northern Nigeria, the state government announced.
Authorities said the officer succumbed to complications from diabetes and hypertension, despite efforts by state officials and security forces to secure his release.
Governor Dikko Radda called the death a “dark moment” and urged a stronger crackdown on the bandit groups still operating in the region. The government pledged to cooperate with federal authorities to pursue and prosecute those responsible.
Banditry remains a serious security problem in northern Nigeria, where criminal gangs frequently carry out kidnappings for ransom, contributing to widespread instability and civilian casualties in recent years.
