KAMPALA, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni announced that Uganda will launch two new satellites, furthering the country’s role in space science.

In a meeting with lawmakers from the ruling party on Wednesday, Museveni explained that one satellite will operate in low Earth orbit to support security and environmental monitoring, including tracking deforestation. The second satellite will be used for broadcasting purposes.

Being on the equator makes launching satellites easier, Museveni noted, adding that the African unity could help the continent effectively occupy low Earth orbit.

While reaching the moon remains a long-term goal, he stated that space technology could help detect threats such as terrorism.
